My name is Abir Thakurta and I am currently a Vice President of Supply Chain for a Home Furnishings Retailer in Atlanta. I am a supply chain enthusiast and I bring a unique perspective to it, serving as a practitioner/supply chain officer, and having being a supply chain consultant and a technologist in the past – all those experiences bringing together the leader I am today. Having an engineering background in Civil and Transportation Engineering, followed by a Masters in Business with focus on Supply Chain Management has helped as well.
I am a supply chain executive with expertise in cross-industry supply chain strategy and planning, global supply chain management and execution, and transformational change gained through specialized high profile roles in diverse industries and regions of the globe. I have been recognized as a results driven business leader with extensive experience in building high performance teams with a focus on P&L accountability, fiscal management and general management.
During my consulting days, I was a strategic advisor, entrepreneurial thought leader and partner to various F500 organizations and had a stellar track record of positioning, selling and delivering supply chain, eCommerce and consumer driven solutions and process improvement programs in complex business environments. I was particularly known for championing effective digital transformational strategies and new business enablement to help drive profitable company operations while managing business risk.
I have spent most of my life in Retail, CPG, Manufacturing (Process, Discrete, Hi-Tech) and Transportation. My Supply Chain expertise comes from the work I have done as an operator, a practitioner, consultant and a technologist in the areas of Demand Planning and Forecasting, Sourcing, Procurement, Supplier Management, Factory Management, Inventory Management, Logistics, Distribution, Home Delivery, MRO, Supply Chain Finance, Global Trade Management, Supply Chain Visibility and Supply Chain Risk Management. And the various technologies and systems required in managing a global supply chain. The confluence of my supply chain and technology acumen puts me in a position to make a difference. I am a disruptor, so I thrive more in environments willing to disrupt the status quo, enabling new business models and putting a focus behind it. I have always been called upon to help businesses to venture into uncharted territories and develop new capabilities.
I am big on safety and diversity in the workplace. I believe leadership is not about taking charge. It is about taking care of those in your charge. And realizing the potential of your team by empowering and motivating them to do things they would never have imagined.
Personally I love being a Dad to my two boys who teach me how to hang loose and cherish life everyday; I am sports fanatic and can pretty much sit and watch any sports or try my hand at it playing whenever I get a chance; I have not been a health nut, but my perspective towards it has changed as I have matured; I am device geek but come at it from a point of skepticism (I don’t buy something just to upgrade); I love food and dwell into ingredients and can critique someone’s cooking not to mention cooking myself for someone I care about (yes if I cook for you, I care about you); I am an avid traveler having spent a good bit of my life traveling and living in 4 continents (Asia/Africa/Europe/Americas); I write when my work permits me and would eventually like to author at least one book in life; I am an expert speaker on all things supply chain and have been told that my speaking engagements bring out the passion in people and can sometimes be professorial in nature for the audience who I captivate; I am social bee – have no problems networking or engaging in discussions around various topics (and have been known to express my opinions as well); I am community supporter and love giving back to the community having come from humble roots in India; and yes, I am a lover of dance (of various forms) even though I am not a good dancer myself (my moves on the floor don’t attract attention).
